A collection of six fun and stylish hats, Liberation celebrates some very remarkable women with each hat. The idea for this hat collection came to me when I was perusing one of my old sociology books on women and their struggles with work, family and society. In the weird way that my brain works, I began to think about the many great women that have made an impact in history and all of our lives, especially during the Women’s Rights and Liberation Movement in the 1920s.Each hat design is named after women who lived during the period of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. I wanted to honor their accomplishments and the roads that they have paved for me as an Asian-American woman from an immigrant family. Of course, I cannot design a collection of knitted hats without honoring two great women in the knitting world: Elizabeth Zimmerman and Barbara G. Walker. Thanks to nudging from friends, I approached Ms. Walker at Sock Summit 2009. With shaky hands and a thumping heart, I briefly explained my project and asked if she would grant me the honor of selecting the design she wanted to be named after her. She was so gracious, kind and seemingly flattered. With some additional courage, I then approached the equally gracious Meg Swansen. I repeated my little spiel about the project and explained my plans to name a hat after her mother (still with shaky hands and a loudly thump in my chest). She seemed tickled by the idea and selected a hat that Ms. Zimmerman would have liked to wear. Squeeee! ____________________________________________________________________________________________
